Comments: We are in late April, which means I have tiny hosta shoots just peeking up from the ground. I have almost 100 different hostas, and can't resist another one. Your wonderful photos helped greatly in writing down some of the hostas I would like to find. I spent the month of March in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, near Brookgreen Gardens. They have a volunteer program, and I got your web site from one of the volunteers. I worked with the horticulture group three mornings a week. What a treat that was! Winter here in upstate New York is 6 months long, and I missed gardening so much. Brookgreen is a sculpture/botanical/historical garden of 9,000 acres, and is well worth a visit if you are in that area. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of hostas and the Japanese language.

Comments: This is a message to Magne in Norway. My e-mail to you came back undelivered.
We have lots of slugs (snail without shell). They eat hosta leaves and make lots of ugly holes. I have just sprinkled some slug/snail bait that I had bought from a garden store. I also go slug hunting at night or after the rain and spray ammonia water when I see slugs. You can mix 1 part of ammonia with 5 parts of water. Some people use beer. You put beer (I don't think slugs are particular about the brand) in a shallow tray such as a disposable pie plate, bury it in the ground a little, so the edge of the tray is the same level as the ground. If you leave it overnight, you will see lots of slugs in the tray in the morning. You can discard the whole thing. I've never tried this method though. Good luck!

Comments: Dear Mikky: What a wonderful web site! Wow! I admire your hostas and your web work so much! I have a few of your hostas. Of course, I had to have "Love Pat" because Pat is my name! Many years ago, maybe 8 or 9 years, I sowed the seeds of my fantastic huge Frances Williams. I have one very big "baby" from Frances W. It is a regular "sieboldiana elegans", but a very nice one! I am trying to grow Aphrodite: it is a fall blooming hosta, supposed to be a recent release from China. The flower is white and apparently double, plus very fragrant. However, I have only seen pictures of this because mine will not bloom this year, I think, though it has been in my garden three years. This year, I bought "Dream Weaver" and "Fire and Ice". "Dream Weaver" has a leaf which is almost perfectly round, very blue, with a yellow streak down the middle. You know what "Fire and Ice" looks like, because you have one.
Thanks once again! Pat

Comments: Thanks for the information about how to grow Hostas from seed. I love to grow things and have been increasing my Hosta collection. Just finished separating my 4 year old Hostas that were getting too thick. I never believed there would be so many divisions. I'm glad its over for this year but can't wait unti next Spring to see them all come up and grow. Again, thanks for the information about seeds. I didn't know, until this year, that they made seed. I always cut off the spent blooms too early. Bob Gomer

Comments: My hosta babies experience: 7 or 8 years ago, I took seeds from Frances Williams and planted them outside in the fall. They grew, slowly. The plant that I have is basically very similar to H. sieboldiana Elegans. It looks no different from a H. sieboldiana Elegans that I bought years ago. But it is special to me because I know this is the hosta that I grew myself from seed!
