Comments: Mikiko,
Todays mail brought my copy of the newsletter of THe Greater Ozarks Hosta Society and you very well done article on Japanese in hosta names was featured in it. I'm in the midst of doing my next newsletter and the article looked like something my 500+ readers could put to good use. I know I learned somethings and I've been around this hosta stuff for quite a while now. Could I get your permission to reprint the article for our Michigan members?
I know that in addition to the article your website would be of interest to many of them. We have quite a few very avid hosta members and it is always fun to see pictures of other gardener's plants.
Our Micigan web site is a pretty basic one and it's purpose is two fold;
We will hopefully get interested gardener's to join MHS so they can recieve the complete newsletter and join us in our activities and secondly to have the calendar and upcoming events available if the member has mislaid their last newsletter (that happens quite a bit).
You will note that the website does not contain any of the articles that appear in the newsletter nor any names or phone numbers. There is an e-mail link that directs inquires/questions to me if folks do not have my e-mail address.
I look forward to hearing from you and very much enjoyed your website
Jan E.

Comments: Mikky you have an excellent website! I am the newsletter editor of the Tri-State Tribune, the quarterly newsletter of the Tri-State Hosta Society. If you check our website (listed above) you will find a membership application and we would love to welcome you as one of our members. I am not sure exactly where your home/garden is located, but it sounds like maybe South Jersey. Our former president lives in Pineville, Pa. (near New Hope) and I am sure that our 3 indoor meetings in Morristown, NJ and our 3 summer garden tours would be of interest to you. Thanks for giving us permission to reprint your article on Japanese Hosta Names in our next newsletter. I am sure our members (now about 380 individuals) will find it informative.

Comments: Great site! I love Hostas too, especially the big leaved varieties, but unfortunaty my soil doesn't suit them so it would be foolish to plant more of them. Nice to see how you're experimenting with the plants that you're growing from seed. I think that's the real gardening spirit...

Translation by Editor: Hello, Mikiko-san! Although all of my hosta seeds are not up yet, streaked ones and yellow leaves have been coming up. I saw your Hosta Babies page and was surprised to see how fast they grow, but as I sowed many varieties of seeds and saw the difference in sizes of the first leaves - some are 4-5 times as large as others, some are as large as 2-year-old - I think I understand. I'd like to have your Growing Up page also translated to Japanese.

I turned large wooded area into hosta field and have been enjoying growing about 200 varieties. I am trying to increase them so I'll be able to sell them in a nearby market in the future. Translation by Editor: Dear Mikiko, how do you do? My name is Nishijima, I'm dosanko (from Hokkaido). I live in Chitose City where I overlook small woods. The hostas that I planted 5 years ago were given to me by an elderly neighbor, and although I don't even know the names, their magnificence is just breathtaking. All hostas in my garden in Hokkaido are a size of a tip of little bamboo shoots now. The new little eyes and fresh green of the woods are hard to put in words. Baby hostas. I have never tried, but it will be my new entertainment for the long winter in Hokkaido. Your page was easy to understand even for a beginner like me. Thank you very much.

Translation by Editor: How do you do? My name is Kawahara. I had an opportunity to see Mrs. Nishijima from Chitose the other day and she told me about your web site. Giving up my career as a white-collar worker, I have been growing trees and some perennials for 25 years in the countryside of Hokkaido. I have been very interested in hostas and, although only several varieties, I grow some in this cold region (Hardiness zone 4). I would like to find suitable varieties for my somewhat shady garden and take my time growing from seeds as a hobby. I have just come to your web site. I am going through the pages now (with a help of a dictionary since I'm not good at English). Please keep in touch.

Translation by Editor: How do you do? I found your site in Ogihara Nursery's home page. Your photos are very pretty! I returned from Houston in March, and started cleaning my garden that was turning to a jungle. I decided to plant hostas and have just planted 6 of them in the garden which had become bare looking right after removing a large tree. Patriot, Wide Brim, Aureomarginata...kind of similar, aren't they? I will come back to your photos from time to time and motivate myself to gardening. See you.

Translation by Editor: Greetings from Japan. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden. Very pleased with your hosta photos, too. I love gardening also and have been working on planting various plants. We are located in the eastern part of Aichi Prefecture; we started our garden where a hill had been leveled. Starting from zero, we now find ourselves struggling every day to take care of our garden with as many as 700 varieties. My husband likes hostas very much and have been buying hostas for about 10 years. He says he has about 100 varieties. We don't have their photos yet, but we will upload their photos some day when we take some. Although I did not understand the value of hostas at first, I am beginning to understand it. They are a must for every garden. My favorite hosta is Sagae. Its wavy leaf shape is the best. It also grows fairy large... More people are getting to understand the value of hostas recently in Japan. Even my plant loving friend's response was "what's good about it?" 10 years ago, but things have changed. Increased number of people understand hostas. My husband told me hostas became popular earlier in the UK and USA, and their breeding and improvements are advanced, isn't it so? Please let me know if you know lovely botanical gardens with hostas or hosta gardens in the USA. I'll see you...

Comments: Your garden is lovely. I was surfing and looking for images of any very dark leaved hosta. Can you make a recommendation? Large would be best, medium will do. Is Black Hills as described in most of the hosta catalogs or will it disappoint? Sorry for so many questions but home gardeners are a very reliable resource. I've been taking Japanese lessons in the hopes that I may one day be able to read the inscriptions on my beautiful Japanese objet d'arte. All my best regards,Andrea.

I just walked through my garden and gathered a lot of hosta seed that
I want to start. I didn't know that they would not look like their moms! But I don't care...I have a lot of hot dry shade and have to water a lot, but love Hosta's and want to try growing them, mainly because they are so expensive to buy as many as I would love to have. I do have a question...this is middle of October, can I start my seed now, or should I wait until Feb or so? And do you not put any of your babies in the garden until they are a couple of years old?
I have a lot to learn and I think your web site will be one I come back to time and again. Thanks.

Central Illinois is a great hosta-growing area, and we have a large, active hosta society. I am a Master Gardener and a hosta collector. My collection is much smaller than yours and I'm primarily interested, at the moment, in finding as many hosta species as I can. Would you know some reliable sources? Several of the species are difficult -- if not impossible -- to locate. Keep up the good work!

Comments: Read your URL with great interest. As hostas in Japan are also expensive, I tried from seeds, too. The method I used was to mix seeds with dried moss, as use for orchids, and add moisture after putting them in poly-bag which has holes for aerization. They germinate well in a week or 10days time, in March in Tokyo. So, I got quite a number of plants but for my dispointment they all loss the beautiful Fu of their parents. And I was wandering why it happen though they are still beautiful. From a 76yrs old Ojiichan.

Comments: I follow Hank Zumach very closely and have much to learn from him. However, I'm also interested in contacting the various participants on Jaak Grosemans' website...people like yourself, also Christine Childstedt, Otto Ganss, Stuart Asch, and other fine people.
I have gone through your hosta list and must say you have a great, wonderful choice of hostas.
