Comments: Beautiful pictures, Mikky! My only complaint is that there aren't any pictures of you and your family. We've been corresponding and trading for almost two years now, haven't we? I have'nt a clue what you look like. I'd send you a pix of me except there aren't any and I'm not very photogenic. I tend to hide when cameras are around.
I can't wait till the trading season is here. I've already ordered a Sague from Hirt's greenhouse, now I need to find a place to put him; I heard on the Hallson site that he's gonna be a very big boy when he grows up. This greenhouse has free shipping and handling, so I may be ordering more from him. I don't know how to post links, but if you do a search for Hirt's Greenhouse and Flowers I'm sure you'll find him. He's located in Ohio. Also, my Bluestone order, another nursery I absolutely love, will be arriving next week. I hope the weather gets better and I can finish remaking my beds so I'll have a place to put them.
Remember, I have a Revolution that I'm going to send you. I'm not sure just when, but you'll be getting it. Let me know what else you want to trade.
Love your site! See you later, Billie

You responded to my request for information about growing hostas from seed. I too found Michael's page very informative and am ready to give it a try. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer and sharing so much with me. Your hostas are beautiful and you are quite a good photographer as well. I will try to let you know how my growing goes.

Comments: Thanks for the information on the "from seeds" section. I also am trying hostas for the first time from seeds. I also used a Ginko Craig as the parents. I have hundreds of little seedlings growing in a 15 gallon aquarium with florescent lights. You may want to change your lighting habit from 24 hours to just slightly less. The chlorophyll equation needs some down time to manufacture the highest amount of energy (maybe 4 hours). Unless you did the experimentation and hostas don't need the down-time. let me know that one. Do the hostas first leaf show the true color or does it need to generate a couple of leaves before you know? Thanks. and good luck. Let me know if you find a way to get a stable varigation.

Comments: Mikky, what a wonderful website! I just picked you up on the Hallson garden forum ... I notice you don't have a Tenryu with its 9 ft. inflorescence (flower stalks) ... I saw a mature clump last year and am acquiring one this year through a trade. I have been curious as to what Tenryu would translate to in English ... you're the first that may be able to provide me with an answer. I've been collecting hosta since the 1970s ... a few years ago I moved from a nearly three acre home site to my little town garden and had to leave several dozen hosta behind ... and only brought my favorites with me to the new house ... needless to say I'm really careful about collecting now due to the space and only get the ones that I think are fantastic. I'm also steadily collecting miniatures which means more hosta in less space. I'm so thrilled to find someone from Japan that can help me make sense of some of these names. Maybe you can post a hosta a day or week that has a Japanese name and then translate it for us. I'm so glad you're on the Hallson site! ... Helen

Comments: I think your site is just wonderful. It's very nice to see a fellow plant person's work - maybe you could come up here and redesign my side bed for me? It's still too cold here for my hostas to peek out yet - we've had a very cold and wet spring so far, but I think that the nice weather is right around the corner and we'll soon be elbows deep in compost once again. I have a big Frances Williams which I divided last year and a gold hosta I can't identify which I will send you a picture of when they emerge to see if you can figure out what they are. I've had it for about 8 years now and have divided it a couple of times. I also have one with gold edges which I would like to identify and will see if I can get the digital camera to do it justice. I've been looking for a Green Piecrust hosta for years but may soon give up if I can't find any here. What is your absolute favourite of the newer varieties?
Regards,
Kerry

Comments: Hi,
I enjoyed your write up and pictures. Every year I am left wondering if I can use my host seeds. I am glad you have had great success. I am the curious type and like to study seed growth. I don't have the patience to wait, wait, and wait. So, I usually plant annual and blend in a few seeds here and there. If they mature great and if they don't, oh well! This year I invested in a small 4 tier green house to grow seeds in garden trays. This has worked out wonderfully. Now, I can watch my plants develop such as Zinnas. We have such a short growing season in Michigan and seeing the flower at the garden center versus this 1" want to be's in the greenhouse negates the delayed gratification. So, I am growing seeds and purchasing full size plants to have the best of both worlds.

Comments: Hi Mikky,
I am Phyllis Lockwood's cousin. She may have mentioned me to you. I have been interested in hostas for 2 or 3 years
now, but more so since I have been contacting Phyllis through e-mail. We had lost touch with each other for over 30 years.
Somehow gardening and hostas came up in one of the e-mails and we've been writing back and forth about
them ever since. Phyllis is always talking about Mikky the 'Hosta-Maniac'. Phyllis just told me about your web-page yesterday
and I've just started exploring it. It is well done and very interesting. I like the article on raising hostas from seed.
I might try that. Do the seed pods form when the flowers form? I never really paid attention before. I'm going over
to my neighbor's right now and dig up some varigated hostas they have extras of. They didn't know what variety
they were. I have only about 10 varieties right now, so every addition is exciting to me.
Sayonara,
Bill

Comments: I have recently begun collecting different varieties of hostas. I am having some trouble with slugs. In one of my hosta gardens, something has been chewing off the leaves. One that I recently moved there because it was being eaten by slugs now has only one leaf left, thanks to the new predator. Another has had the top completely snipped off. I think it is a woodchuck.

Comments: Dear Mikky, Great to hear back from you so soon! As to some of your more harmful, hungry visitors -- sprinkling bone meal around your plants is a great fertilizer, which I'm sure you know. But, if you sprinkle some blood meal around too (another good fertilizer), most little animals will stay away because they don't like the smell, and it's not harmful to them. The only caution I have is that if raccoons visit also, that blood meal will unfortunately arouse they're curiosity and they'll dig holes when they visit. Nobody likes bird droppings, but it's amazing to me that with all the birds that there are, that they don't manage to plop on people more often. Please let me know how the blood meal suggestion works. (You'll have to repeat sprinkling after a hard rain, and also do it again every 14 days or two weeks.) But if you're lucky and see results right away, don't repeat again until you see animal visitor problems again. Again, good luck. Jo-Anne Lemaire, greenjo@xcelco.on.ca

Comments: Hello again, Mikky, Yes, try some other stores by all means. Finding blood meal shouldn't be too hard to find, although some stores sell it as a mix of bone meal and blood meal in one box. This year I was able to find it separately, and find it helps my lilies be their best when sprinkled on them after they are finished blooming. We don't have a raccoon problem here, and it keeps the squirrels from eating plants they shouldn't and from digging up plants. As for blood meal attracting your dog into the garden to do damage, no, I've never heard of anyone's dog behaving that way. Generally dogs and cats are repulsed by the smell of the bloodmeal. Happy Gardening!

My wife, Donna and I have just started building a new house in a small wooded valley with a beautiful creek running through it. The area is shaded by many tall trees and we have trouble growing many plants. My wife has discovered that Hostas will do just fine in the shade. So we are now digging up as much information as time will allow. I found your Web Site to be very informative and most of all very Tranquil and well done. We will come back many times to see the changes and to gain knowledge about hostas. We do hope that you might be able to answer our questions when they arise, if it would not be to much of a bother. Thank you for your tranquil web site.

Comments: I used to work with Phyllis Lockwood -- until I moved to Arizona. But we still stay in touch; she knew I'd enjoy your website, and I did. I'll visit again. You have a beautiful collection, and have done a great job on the site. I used to have a lot of hostas in my garden in New Hampshire, but am not so sure they'd enjoy it here in Arizona. We are zone 7a I think, but high altitude (5,000 feet) and dry (although we do have some irrigated areas.....). There are some shady sections of our garden....maybe I'll try a few.
